First time attending the Annual Convention?

Expect to…

  • learn about social and personality psychology by attending symposia and poster sessions.
  • meet those who have shaped and changed the field of social and personality psychology.
  • network with mentors, professors and students who are just as passionate about social and personality psychology as you are.
  • find future colleagues and collaborative partners for your research.
  • plan to get the most out of your time at SPSP 2017 and enjoy your time in San Antonio

Helpful Tips

  1. Go to the First Time Attendee Welcome Reception on Wednesday, 1/18 from 6:00 - 7:00 PM to meet other first time attendees, meet some prominent convention veterans, and find a friend to navigate your experience.
  2. Dress the part – attire for the convention is business casual.
  3. Attend sessions that interest you, rather than trying to attend every session. There is not enough time to see and do everything, so focus on those which you are most passionate about.
  4. Take advantage of networking opportunities like the Early Career Mentoring Happy Hour or Non-Academic Employee Social Hour make time to mingle with peers, colleagues and future collaborators. Students can take advantage of mentoring lunches sponsored by the Student Committee and the GLBT Alliance in Social and Personality Psychology (GASP).
  5. Bring business cards and give them to people you'd like to stay in touch with. They're especially great for social events.
  6. Check out the program ahead of time to plan which sessions you wish to attend and familiarize yourself with their general location.
  7. Wear comfortable shoes because sore feet can ruin anyone’s day.
  8. Find time to explore the awesome city of San Antonio. See what there is to do here.
  9. Remember to eat, you have the choice of either 2 drink tickets (to be used at social events) or a boxed lunch. If you choose drink tickets, find time to eat nearby.
  10. Register for a preconference after looking at what preconferences are being held this year.
  11. Download the app. It’s a mobile and fast way to view the program while you are attending sessions. You can access it here.
  12. Book your hotel through our housing block, you'll save time and money!
  13. Finally, don’t forget to have fun! Make sure to tag all social media from the conference with the official hashtag #SPSP2017.
